The Corn Snake or Red Rat Snake,Pantherophis guttata previously Elaphe guttata guttata is considered to be one of the most frequently kept species of snake and is found in terraria all over the world. The natural body pattern consists of reddish-brown saddle blotches, bordered in black, overlying an orange or yellowish brown ground colour. The ventral surface is white with black rectangular blotches. Adults may reach a total length of 90 to 140 cm. The record length reported is 183cm. Corn Snakes are not venomous, and kill their prey by constriction.
The Corn Snake comes from the south-eastern part of the United States, ranging from New Jersey to Florida and west to the Mississippi River. It inhabits a wide variety of habitats, but prefers sandy pine forest and grassland. It is often found close to human habitation, especially farmland and farm buildings where it preys upon the rodents attracted to them. As well as small rodents, chicks, bird eggs, lizards, and frogs form their diet. Mating occurs in spring ( April to June ) with up to 30 eggs being laid in June, July or August. Once the eggs are laid the female has no further contact with them. Incubation takes approximately 52 - 65 days, this being dependant on temperature. The juveniles closely resemble the adults in pattern, but are normally darker in colour. Hatchlings are approximately 20 - 30cm long and are totally self sufficient from the time that they hatch
Different geographic areas produce different looking Corn Snakes, and many breeders maintain this genetic variation in the animals they produce. The design on this shirt depicts some of these as well as some of the mutations that naturally occur and have been maintained with selective breeding.
The "Carolina" Corn Snake is noted for its vibrant red-orange colours and clear bright pattern, whilst the "Miami" phase Corn Snake has a grey ground colour in contrast to the bright orange-red saddles. The other three colour mutations shown are: the "Amelanistic" which lacks melanin (black), and therefor has red eyes and a strikingly bright orange body coloration. Conversely the "Anerythristic" colour morph Corn Snake is missing the red pigment, creating a silver grey to black coloured snake. By combining the amelanistic and anerythristic genes together in one snake we produce the last snake depicted, the stunning "Snow" corn.
Corn Snakes are popular pet snakes and can live for up to 20 years, they are both rewarding and fascinating creatures to keep. Like many other animals, snakes require specific conditions, special housing and heating arrangements are required when they are kept in captivity. They are a serious commitment and this should be considered prior to obtaining any animal. Due to the efforts of professional snake breeders and herpetoculturists the captive breeding of corn snakes is well established. Captive bred, high quality, disease free Corn Snakes make ideal snakes for the terrarium and are readily available. Wild Corn Snakes, or for that matter any reptile, are a valuable part of the ecosystem to which they belong. This can be detrimentally disrupted and unbalanced if they are removed to become pets !! |
